Whether it’s your first time visiting the Whidbey Institute or you’ve enjoyed its landscape for many years, we invite you to join Spirited Work for a weekend of Listening to the Land. What does that mean exactly? Walk the land and you’ll find out. Listen to the trees rustle, hear the crunch of earth under your feet, meditate in the silence of nature, and above all, breathe. It’s the land that draws us, keeps us grounded while we’re here, and if we listen close enough, provides us with the answers to the questions we ponder most. Every amazing leadership program and community gathering held at the Institute is grounded in the 70 acres of this pristine sacred space, and Spirited Work is no different.

For 13 years, Spirited Work has been one of the Institute’s core, ongoing programs, providing a space where we discover and nourish the goodness in ourselves and others, where we bring our life’s work to share and build community, and where we meet in sacred space to listen to what the land has to say to us. Spirited Work is a well-spring of creativity that inspires people to workshop their ideas, expand their leadership potential, and connect to and sustain their thriving communities. Our guiding principles are aligned with the Institute’s core values and support its programs.

Through Appreciative Inquiry and Open Space, the natural practices of self-organizing, we take collective and individual responsibility for living the seasonal rhythms set forth by Angeles Arrien in The Four-Fold Way. As we enter spring, we’ll be engaged in The Way of the Healer - a call to pay attention to what has heart and meaning in our lives – the perfect opportunity to Listen to the Land, reconnect to the earth that grounds us.We enjoy time in nature and gather in circle, song, dance, and play. We share deeply and laugh loudly. At the end of the weekend, we’ve been heard and acknowledged, so we’re inspired to take what we learn into the world and nourish others through it. All shapes and sizes, new-comers and returning participants, are welcome to join in the gift that is this ongoing learning practice. Come and explore with us and expect the unexpected!

With that, we offer this calling question: “What is the land telling us about building thriving communities, supporting thriving leaders, and maintaining a thriving planet?”

Welcome to Spirited Work!

From The Four-Fold Way by Angeles Arrien, Ph.D
  • Winter − The Way of the Warrior − Show up and choose to be present
  • Spring − The Way of the Healer − Pay attention to what has heart and meaning
  • Summer − The Way of the Visionary − Tell the truth without blame or judgment
  • Fall − The Way of the Teacher − Be open to outcome, not attached to outcome

The Law of Two Feet governs participation in all activities: “Take responsibility for what you love!”
