Learning from the Land Program conversation

A program focusing on service learning and sustainability education, Learning from the Land offers:

  • Service Learning programs in the garden and forest watersheds of Chinook.
  • Growing Groceries, a series of classes about successfully growing your own food.
  • The Chinook Westgarden, an organic garden with vegetables, berries, culinary and healing herbs, growing food for the Whidbey Institute kitchen and for the Good Cheer Food Bank. The Westgarden is a vibrant living classroom for service learning programs, work with youth-at-risk, and Growing Groceries hands-on classes.
  • Work Parties in the garden to learn, grow, and be in community with others.
  • Community Gardening Leadership Training, an apprenticeship to train the next generation of leaders in community gardening.

Learning from the Land is coordinated by Cary Peterson, a skilled teacher, leader, and grower who has been an integral part of the Whidbey Institute and the Chinook Lands for more than two decades.

This program thrives with the assistance from apprentices and volunteers. We are currently reviewing applicants for the 2012 Community Gardening Leadership Training.

If you are interested in a service learning program for your school, organization or retreat, or would like to volunteer, please contact Cary at land@whidbeyinstitute.org
